And from your pastor:

READINGS FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2020 First Reading: Exodus 19:2-8a At Sinai God assured Israel, “You shall be my treasured possession,” and commissioned them to serve as mediating priests for the nations. The people commit themselves completely to God’s will. 2[The Israelites] had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain.3Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.” 7So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8aThe people all answered as one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.” Psalm: Psalm 100 1Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands! 2Serve the Lord with gladness; come into God’s presence with a song. 3Know that the Lord is God, our maker to whom we belong; we are God’s people and the sheep of God’s pasture. 4Enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving and the courts with praise; give thanks and bless God’s holy name. 5Good indeed is the Lord, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from age to age. Second Reading: Romans 5:1-8 We are no longer God’s enemies but have peace with God because we were brought into a right relationship with God through Christ’s death. 1Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Gospel: Matthew 9:35--10:8 [9-23] The mission of Jesus’ followers is to continue the mission of Jesus himself. Here, he instructs his first disciples as to how they might proclaim the gospel through their words and deeds. 35Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” 10:1Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. 5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. [9Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, 10no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food. 11Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12As you enter the house, greet it. 13If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. 15Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 16“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. 19When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; 20for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 22and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”] BIRTHDAYS for JUNE June 1: Rose Morford; June 7: Marty Engel; June 10 Marilynn Smith; June 15: DeWayne Cox; June 17: David Jalkanen; June 20: Bryan Young; June 25: David Rodgers; June 8: Dan Bays, Cindy Bergstrom ANNIVERSARIES for JUNE June 3: David & Evelyn Chaveriat; June 7: Boyd Manges & JoAnn Wilder; June 15: Sheri & Jeff Popp; June 18 Ben & Wendy Laser, Paul & Melanie Weaver; June 19: Vira & Bill Heise; June 20: David & Mary Jalkanen; June 21: Betony & Keith Braddock; June 25:Ernst & Kathy Rusche; June 26: Dean & Diana Tahtinen; June 29: Dan Bays & Pastor Sherry McGuffin-Bays EMAILED A FUNDRAISER LETTER Please take time to read the letter asking for your feed back concerning our building fundraising efforts. We have been so blessed at Cross of Christ by volunteers who have donated funds for painting, fixing the ceiling and roof, new glass door, gutters and many other items on the management list. BUT there is still a need for replacement of windows…so please read the letter. There is so much going on in ministry for the sake of our community and this is one of those things!!! NOISY OFFERING Noisy offering for Cross of Christ for our community is so very important and at this time there are many areas of ministry that need our help. We are collecting financial donations to help support Luke Ulrich’s ministry in Malawi, Africa. Luke, Jamie, Mark, Miriam, and Aaron returned to the United States a little early to get home safely during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are now gathering support through prayer and financial donations. We have committed to pray for the Ulrich family at every gathering and you will find them on the prayer list. And we are blessed to have Luke’s mother, Lois, who continually keeps us updated as well. The work that they have done allows for women and children and families to make a living canning sauce and vegetables and selling them or keeping them for their own nutrition. That is just one of the many acts of service. If you would like to send a donation for them, just mail it to the church at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church at 1450 E. Mitchell St. Petoskey, MI. We will be sure to give them a check before they return to Malawi. If you are gathering your noisy offering, you can drop it off at the church and if Pastor Sherry is not there you can let her know and she will come ASAP to pick it up. Call her at 231-881-1212 (or you can text her as well!) PREPARING TO RETURN TO WORSHIP IN THE NEXT MONTHS: Pastor Sherry McGuffin has been meeting with the Health Department and the local ministerial group discussing safe practices for our congregations. While we have seen some church doors open, we are not there just yet. We will discuss with the Health Department, the Bishop and our Presiding Bishop about when is the safest and wisest time to rejoin in worship again in the sanctuary of the church building. BUT…we want to begin the preparations…so we are asking that everyone wear a mask in the church and continue to keep social distancing. We will have some disposable masks available at church, but if you have your own we encourage you to wear yours. Again, the council will be educating us on HOW we will gather as the time comes. The church office building is closed for meetings and for conferencing, so please contact Pastor Sherry McGuffin at [email protected] or 231-881-1212 if you have any questions or concerns. CHURCH OFFERINGS: You can mail your offering to the church at Cross of Christ Lutheran 1450 East Mitchell St. Petoskey, Michigan 49770. We will have one Paper Pantry a month, the 2nd Thursday of the month from 5-6:30PM. Clients will receive 2 bags so that they only need to make one trip a month. We are trying to keep people as safe with the least amount of contact as possible. Our volunteers wear gloves and masks and the clients drive by and receive the supplies in their mode of transportation. So we still take donations and supplies! And we served 36 families at our last paper pantry in April. Please pray for everyone who is vulnerable. SOUP KITCHEN STILL SERVING Soup Kitchen is still serving but we are serving brown bagged lunches. The lunches will be made at the church with volunteers in masks and gloves. Then we will have one or two of the same volunteers serve at First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey right out of the back of your car or near the parking lot. First Presbyterian is going through major construction but they are still serving lunches on Sunday as well in the same manner. Please contact Sue Finley if you would like to help or you can send financial donations to Cross of Christ with soup kitchen in the memo to 1450 E. STILL LOOKING FOR A CHAIR TO ORGANIZE SPECIAL COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES TO BE HELD AT CROSS OF CHRIST WHEN WE GATHER AGAIN! This ministry is now more important than ever. We need to be present in this community when we return from self quarantine and time away from each other. We can and will be present in ways that build up community, welcome one another and our friends and neighbors home again…like a block party for this neighborhood and all of Petoskey…a home coming perhaps! MARK THE CALENDAR: NO MEETINGS ARE BEING HELD AT THE CHURCH AT THIS TIME UNTIL THE QUARANTINE IS LIFTED. SO WHEN WE RETURN: When using the church building for meetings etc. please mark the day and time on the calendar, on the bulletin board by the women’s bathroom, so a reminder can be put in the announcements. It is important for the office to have this information. THE DANIEL PLAN BIBLE STUDY Dean Tahtinen began teaching this study. This book is wonderful to read right now and to help us focus on what it means to be children of God in this time and place when it is hard to find a new rhythm to life. Remember to eat healthy, exercise and PRAY without ceasing! GIFTS TO BE GIVEN!!! When people ask you where you give donations…tell them Cross of Christ. We welcome all financial donations so give in honor of someone or in memory of beloved. And as you prepare for your future planning remember Cross of Christ in your giving! READINGS FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2020 First Reading: Genesis 1:1--2:4a At the beginning of time, God the Creator, God the powerful Word, and God the life-giving Spirit form the earth and all its inhabitants. God sees that all this created work is good and then rests on the seventh day. 1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. 12The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” 21So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. 25God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” 27So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” 29God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. 2:1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. 2And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. 4aThese are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. Psalm: Psalm 8 1O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! 2you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. 3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, 4what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them? 5Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and honor you crown them. 6You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet: 7all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field, 8the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea. 9O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ’s grace, God’s love, and the Spirit’s partnership. [Paul writes:] 11Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20 After his resurrection, Jesus summons his remaining disciples and commissions them to baptize and teach all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” BIRTHDAYS for MAY June 1: Rose Morford; June 7: Marty Engel; June 10 Marilynn Smith; June 15: DeWayne Cox; June 17: David Jalkanen; June 20: Bryan Young; June 25: David Rodgers; June 8: Dan Bays, Cindy Bergstrom ANNIVERSARIES June 3: David & Evelyn Chaveriat; June 7: Boyd Manges & JoAnn Wilder; June 15: Sheri & Jeff Popp; June 18 Ben & Wendy Laser, Paul & Melanie Weaver; June 19: Vira & Bill Heise; June 20: David & Mary Jalkanen; June 21: Betony & Keith Braddock; June 25:Ernst & Kathy Rusche; June 26: Dean & Diana Tahtinen; June 29: Dan Bays & Pastor Sherry McGuffin-Bays EMAILED A FUNDRAISER LETTER Please take time to read the letter asking for your feed back concerning our building fundraising efforts. ZOOM is free to join in and there will always be a link sent on our facebook page. If you would like the link in an email, please email me at [email protected] and I will make sure that you get the link! It changes each week. Please call Pastor Sherry McGuffin for help in navigating this or if you need to talk or if you have questions, or because you want to! Information for joining zoom is also found on our facebook page Cross of Christ Lutheran, Petoskey MI and on our youth page at Cross of Christ Lutheran Youth Petoskey MI. To get onto Facebook Live you need to be a friend of the congregation. Since starting facebook live sermons and worship we have had an influx of neighbors and friends join us. This is live. I do save it so that you can go back and look and I will begin to put them under videos on our facebook page so that you can find them quickly. YOUTUBE CHANNEL: We now host a channel on YouTube. You can subscribe to our channel at Cross of Christ, Petoskey. Pastor Sherry had started her own channel but we have moved everything over to Cross of Christ. When you subscribe you will receive notices when something new is posted to the channel. AND, you can make comments when you subscribe. Thank you to Bryan Young for creating this space for our church. There is special music and all of our services so far since we began. Mitchell St. Petoskey, MI 49770 You can text Sue Finley at 231-881-0091 or leave her a message. SENIOR HIGH YOUTH are receiving a devotion each week. Please let Pastor Sherry McGuffin know if you would like to receive them in a text or email or snail mail! We can do them all!!!! Thanks! Congratulations to Nicole Ottney on her awards from Boyne City High School and to Wesley Meckstroth at his graduation from Inland Lakes!!! MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH are planning a mission event this summer. Because of COVID 19 and taking care of our family and friends and strangers we will be staying home for mission. This year we can help a lot around our church and neighborhoods. We will meet and work locally this year. Stay tuned for more information.
